What Happened Last Valentine's Day

“Valentine’s Day is just a day made by those greeting card companies.”

“Everyday is Valentine’s Day!”

Can you tell the difference between the two statements above? Concisely the first thinks February 14 is just an overhyped day when there is a sudden emergence of flowers and heart-shaped balloons everywhere. On the other hand, the second believes it can be celebrated 365 days a year (366 for a leap year) and not just St. Valentine’s feast day.

Before you ask me on what happened to me last Thursday, here are things you should know about:

  1. For the 19th year in a row I didn’t go out on a date with a guy (insert Forever Alone meme here)

  2.  I didn’t get any chocolates, a bouquet of roses, or got serenaded by a chorale

  3. I had two exams that day in FAMIPOP and STATLIT

  4. I had an interview for my application in Green Giant FM’s Creatives Committee

Every time I passed by a sweet couple or someone with flowers and a teddy bear in hand my face looked like this:

Ooh, how evil of me to react like that.

The day began with my student assistant job at the Development and Alumni Relations Office. While I was checking out my social networking profiles, the office’s messenger asked me if I would be going out on a date with someone today. I said no. Following the reply he gave me this advice, “Sabi nga nila, may kupido at stupido!” At around 10AM, I left the office for an early lunch at Mang Inasal where I had my first taste of their famed pork sisig in addition to three cups of rice and accompanied by cheesy OPM love songs. Well duh, how can you call it Valentine’s Day when all you play on your stereo is Gangnam Style? Oh wait that song is so last year. Harlem Shake is the in thing now.

After lunch, I headed to Miguel building for my FAMIPOP class where we had a quiz and a film showing of Our Family Wedding. The feature itself was hilarious yet realistic because it was based primarily on exogamous / interracial marriages. Right before class was dismissed, our tutor showed us this short clip of him proposing to his girlfriend as soon as they reached the top of the mountain they climbed together back in January this year. Awwww! When the clock struck 1 in the afternoon, I headed to Velasco building for my interview with a Green Giant FM DJ in regards to my application. Ten minutes later, I left the room with great confidence knowing I left a good impression with the DJ who interviewed me. The results are still pending as of this writing. I will update you as soon as they’re out!

STATLIT exam was bearable even though I was one of the last ones to finish it. After I was done with the test, I checked my phone only to see an influx of Monzie’s text messages and missed calls. I was alarmed knowing something wrong happened to her. Once I returned her call, I rushed to the fourth floor of Miguel where I comforted her because of a petty phone call she received. Kevs, Tisha, and Jeline followed us a few minutes later. Since we were all dateless this year, we embarked on the idea of going to White Hat in One Archers Place in order to have a group date of our own. However for Kevs, he left early because of a family outing so it was just the four of us girls who went on with the plans.

A random thought just popped out my head: I dig froyo.

Then there were the snapshots:

On the same day a year ago, we had our first LEAP experience wherein we took our respective alternative classes, ice skated in MOA, and had lunch at Sbarro. Lovely day indeed!

Despite not having a main squeeze last Thursday, I’d like to thank all those who greeted me! I still enjoyed Valentine’s Day without being the Minnie to Mickey or the lace to a shoe.

One more thing: I got hugs from a bunch of people. At least I can conclude I did not go home empty-handed this year.

How about you? How did you spend this year’s Hearts Day?
