The Flyers Got Run Over By A Reindeer

The title came from a song off the Penguins’ fake holiday CD. I rolled on the floor in laughter when I first read that, but hey it’s legit! The bottomline is: I don’t like the Philadelphia Flyers. If ever they win the Cup next year, please don’t chirp me this:

Oh wait, are they even in a playoff spot right now?

2013 is almost over, I’m turning two decades old in less than thirty days, and I’ll be spending Christmas in Johor Bahru with my parents. But these things won’t stop me from putting up my first legit blog entry in eight days to make all of your wishes of hearing any updates about my life come true in a snap.

Let us all look back at the SMO Christmas Party last December 7 at the lovely Henry Sy Hall roofdeck which I spent with my G&W babies. Thank you very much Lyka for these Instax snappies! <3

For our VPRODUC finals, each group was required to produce a short film on whatever floats our boat. In our group’s case, we decided to embark on Pick Me Up, a romantic comedy about a girl trying to impress a guy - with twists and turns involved. Casting of the male lead was the hardest part since a lot of the options either declined or were busy, but at least in the end we were able to recruit someone who turned out to be fit for the role! Shooting the film took us two days while editing took another two and a half. We breathed a sigh of relief once we watched the finished film because we were so proud of what we just accomplished. Apart from that, we were able to bond in between at Tori Box (where we shot the Jessy Mendiola McSpicy parody scene) and Madi’s condo.

Here’s the poster we made:

I'm An Extra in The Walking Dead Except That I Post on Tumblr After Dark and Rant Something Based on A Daft Punk Hit

I’m up all night to get lucky, they said.

It will be fun, they said.

Let’s raise our cups to the stars, they said.

It will be fun, they said.

I don’t have a cup to raise to the stars.  I’m up all night because it’s Comm Arts being Comm Arts, not to win the Mega Millions sweepstakes. Baa baa.

I’m Here (2010)

Directed By: Spike Jonze

“Gusto nyo ba magka-boyfriend na computer?” - Miss Arevalo

Last November 20, my VPRODUC professor Miss Arevalo made us watch a bunch of short films in preparation for our final project. I’m Here was the finale of all the shorts we watched in class; and all I could say is that I’m very impressed with Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich), the director of this fantastic film. The plot revolves around two robots finding love in a world dominated by humans and machines. The values of sacrifice, unselfishness, commitment are challenged along the way as their relationship grows deeper.

A well-executed and exceptional storyline, an eye-popping display of cinematography, a soothing soundtrack, and captivating acting from the cast are so essential that when combined they formulate the perfect phenomenal film.  Despite its limited release (an independent short film to be precise), I’m Here has proven to be a sensation to critics and audiences alike.

I liked the film so much I downloaded Aska Matsumiya’s “There Are Many Of Us” almost immediately. To be exact, it is Francesca and Sheldon’s (the robot couple) theme in those swoon-worthy scenes. Do you need inspiration as an escape from all the stress, or something to squeeze out your imagination for your upcoming love story to be made into a film or novel five years from now? If you answered yes to both of these questions, then listen to the song and make your own version of the love story - so brilliant that once I get to read or watch it in the future we could then all agree that Twilight should be inducted in Hollywood’s Hall of Shame for its outstanding achievement as “trendsetter of asinine expectations of romance since 2008”.

Without further ado, listen to this lovely song HERE

Oh and one more thing: Andrew Garfield is Sheldon’s voice actor.

My Rating: 5/5. Watch the film and you will know why I rated it this high.

We're Talking About Winning Here (And Fair Weather Too)

At some point in time we have that flaming desire to win. There’s no denying to the fact we’d all love to be a winner. Not the haughty type, but the one who remains humble even with a victory. Any team in any sport, whether it is football or ice hockey or basketball, has eyes for the grand prize. Winning it all is not a piece of cake as it requires the right amount of persistence and dedication along the long road one has to take, not to mention suppressing the slumps in between.

What happens exactly when you get the coveted victory, sweeter than having to deal with some little thing you can brush off in a few years? Let us take the case of the DLSU Green Archers MBT, the recently-crowned champions of the UAAP senior men’s basketball division. If up until now you still think their win was a fluke, take time to look back at their struggles early in the first round which was then followed by a resurgence in form of a nine-game winning stretch halted only by a last-second shot by the UST Growling Tigers to give them the series lead. Everyone followed up with their own predictions of what can happen in the next two games of the epic Taft vs. Espana debacle for which is one for the record books. A percentage of the UAAP-bound populace said it would end with a two-game sweep by the Tigers, others thought it would force a Game 3, and the Archers would win the next two games according to the hopeful ones. Granted were the second and third predictions as the series indeed went to three games, and the mighty Archers did win its first championship since 2007 after rallying later in the match-up. A random piece of history: I was only in my freshman year of high school at the time the Taft-based squad had its taste of the heralded trophy.

Six years have passed and a lot of things have changed since then. We’ve all witnessed a dynasty bannered by five straight championships from a team deemed unstoppable the last few years. Everyone predicted there would be a six-peat for them, but it slowly dissolved into a fantasy following a lackluster performance for majority of the season. Some who claimed to be “fans” only because of their dynasty flamed out one by one only to root for another winning team. Some people, however, stayed loyal to the team even in the hardest times and I admire them for that. When the Archers went 5-9 (including a dubious eight losses in nine games in the second round) back in 2011, my optimism was embattered over the heartbreaks I had to endure while watching the games. As a fan, watching the endless litany of games-we-should’ve-won-but-we-blew-it made it unbearable to the eyes as did my mind for the latter accumulated nothing but pessimism thoughts.

Fast forward to 2013. The crown is back to Taft. Everyone is happy. Fireworks on cue. Case closed - not so fast! Now the team is on top of the collegiate basketball mountain, more people come to town to kiss their shiny gold medals and nothing else. Loving the overwhelming support the Archers riding on from their success, but once everything is out of control, will these medal-digging people still shower them with such emotions?

We know people who wear this certain team’s apparel even though they cannot name five players from there. In line with that, I feel nothing but disgust every time I see someone wearing a shirt from (team name here) even though they only support them just because of their winning streaks without knowing who the other players are besides the star player. Wherever I go, the jerseys of NBA teams I only see are either Lakers, Heat, Knicks, or Celtics. Apparently there is no love for the Nuggets, Pacers, and most especially Jordan’s Bobcats. Same goes for those UAAP teams: apparel bearing two or three universities with respectable records in basketball everywhere in the street. Sightings of those “fans” remind me of the time when a huge number of Miami Heat fans left Game 6 of this year’s NBA Finals only because they were losing to the San Antonio Spurs. Unfortunately for them, they didn’t stay to witness Ray Allen’s miracle which proved to be a game-winning shot for the Heat. Therefore I quote Chris Bosh’s reaction once news broke out on fans leaving the arena before it ended, “Don’t come back to Game 7."

And for this very whimsical reason, Bosh was right.

Shame on those Heat bandwagoners. Thanks to Bosh, they have been exploited as fans who would leave the arena when their team is crawling on its bellies just to score. This is a big no-no in being a fan in general. A fair-weathered disposition is greatly unwelcome in the legion.

Everyone loves a winner, but that is neither a valid excuse nor the main reason to hop on a team or a certain player. Be there to love the team not only because your favorite player is there or the media hype surrounding them but also with the way they play. I support my school’s basketball team not because their players are such eye candy they can be likened to athletic versions of Francisco Lachowski.  My support comes from the exuberance they exhibit in every game they’re at. Pittsburgh Penguins was the first team I enjoyed watching when I first got into hockey. In fact, I didn’t even know they were a winning team until later. The more I followed the sport, the deeper I connected myself to the Pens and so did my familiarity with the other twenty-nine NHL teams.

So there you have it: the confessions of a sports fan who hates asinine bandwagoners and loves her team wholeheartedly win or lose. Now you all know why I don’t hop on the Clippers truck despite their drastic turnaround from late-night punchline to serious title contender. To all the people who switched from Lakers to the team I just mentioned, where were you when Lob City was the doormat of the NBA several years ago?

Another question to those who only like the Green Archers just because of their appearances or their success this season: where were you when they missed the Final Four twice in 2009 and 2011?

Before I let the curtains fall on the floor, realization hit me hard: it took me three hours to type this entry in my computer and another twenty-one to collect and organize these thoughts.

Spinnin' like a hurricane

October 4-5: LASARE3 at Charles Huang Conference Center in Batangas. The place was really calm mostly because of the cool air and the luscious trees everywhere we went.  It may be the most memorable LASARE I’ve ever had in my entire college stay next to LASARE1 back in freshman year. Just a little random fact: did you know that all of my LASARE sessions took place between October 4-6 apart from the fact my section was either A54 or A55? Coincidence? I think not. :)

image

I was not an exception to the vulnerability of weight gain due to the buffet every meal which was served every four to six hours. It was at LASARE3 where I first learned how the magnifique taste of carabao milk gelatin. Besides the round-the-clock meals we devoured ourselves into, my favorite part would have to be the bonding session with my roomies Angel and Monzie! LASARE3 would have been nothing but just some memory without the two of you.

My very own interpretation of Rejoice’s “Haba ng Hair!” campaign featuring two of the girls who made LASARE3 so awesome. Teehee :“>

"I see trees of green…” It’s a wonderful world indeed at Batangas!

We also made a little friend: this super cute dog named Roxy! She’s cuteness overload despite having only three decent shots of this diminutive pet which made our heart melt the whole time we played with her.

October 12 - What a way to cap off that fantastic week where a bunch of great things happened such as reconnecting with old friends and getting a good grade for the VPRODUC lockdown exercise! Not only it was graduation day for some, it was also the day the DLSU Green Archers brought home the crown back to Taft as UAAP Senior Men’s Basketball Champions! Some hours before, I attended the second of the two-day Creative Writing workshop as part of the CMEP (Comprehensive Media Education Program) exclusive for SMO members. As the clock struck four, our facilitator Sir Kokoy dismissed us immediately so we could all watch the live streaming of the deciding game of the UAAP Basketball Finals in Henry Sy Hall.

Due to the torrential rains the night before, I was supposed to watch the game at home instead for safety reasons but thank the Lord for a better weather that Saturday afternoon. What an experience to witness history with your fellow Lasallians! The game was heart-stopping from the first few minutes of the first quarter until the time expired in overtime. The crowd groaned in unison every time the Archers failed to convert their free throws or three-pointers. Every time the Archers got to shoot and block the Growling Tigers’ attempts to score, the crowd ruptured to glowing cheers. Five minutes into overtime, we joined hands through the straddling beats of our hearts as players from both teams went back and forth with the championship on the line. A free throw and a two-pointer later, an eighth title for DLSU was signed, sealed, and delivered. A feat of greatness was achieved after an up-and-down season wherein the team was in danger of missing the playoffs at one point in the first round. However, they were able to rally from the deficit and now they’re back on top.

When the clock expired in overtime, everyone in attendance of the live viewing went nuts! Friends squealed and jumped while hugging in circles. Faculty members and alumni who were present at the time exchanged congratulatory handshakes. Twitter was in shambles as users tweeted their frustrations and happiness all in a second. Photos of the championship game were everywhere you click. Man, what a gut-wrenching feeling for many of us to be part of the championship experience before graduation! And as for those who marched in the PICC to close another chapter of their lives, this would have to be the best graduation gift they would cherish for many years to come.

Watched the game in Henry Sy with these girls <3

At the time DLSU was down by as much as 15 points at the end of the second quarter, I was so frustrated I wanted to go home for I believed our school’s basketball team would never recover from the point deficit. Alas, we rallied to get the last laugh on the most thrilling UAAP Finals game I’ve ever watched in my entire life!

Calm and collected: The crowd glued to the screen during commercial break

As a reward of the University’s recent success given the multiple championships and podium finishes in majority of the UAAP first round games, a victory party was held last Thursday at the Henry Sy Hall grounds to give thanks to the blessings showered upon us.

image

My girls + Kevs (forever camera shy LOL) and more friends made Thursday a really happy and memorable one. To Monzie, Jeline and Kevs, thank you so much for the BBB dinner, our trip around Taft, and our mini-karaoke at the Quad!

An obligatory selfie to change my 2 month old Facebook profile picture

There was a shirt selling held during Animo Night, but I did not have extra cash to purchase a single championship apparel *sobs hysterically*.  My goal at the end of the month is to save at least P400 so I could buy something like this one or any DLSU-related shirt for this matter: image

This past Friday, I finally finished a simple typography I made just for fun which I’ll reveal soon once I’ve made adjustments to it. Just wait for it on Instagram and Twitter!

Before I bid adieu, let me tell you why October has been better than September (so far):

  • Got to see a bunch of friends inside campus after a long time of not seeing each other :“>

  • Busy yet bonding moments with friends and GNW 2014 staffers <3

  • The sports part of my brain is functioning again

  • GV, just GV

I couldn’t ask for more. In my next post which would be whenever I’m free from all the school / orgwork this week, I will share my sentiments about the Green Archers, followers, and more.

One last thing: the Penguins are on a hot streak right now! \:D/

In Less Than a Thousand Words

My mind is stacked with research questions, conceptual maps, and rationales.

In Buzz Lightyear voice showing an imaginary Woody the universe: “Research, research everywhere!"

Today’s agenda lists only two things: INSERCH class and the Animo Night.

I’m so proud of my school’s basketball team right now. This might be the only time I’ll ever experience this in my entire tenure in Taft, so allow me to drown in tears of joy as we celebrate a victory well-deserved.

And LOL, no sembreak! Post about my life the past two weeks this weekend.

Talk to you later bye!

The Arrival, Blogspot to Tumblr, Etc.

Before anything else, you can now view my blog entries from my Blogspot here on Tumblr! Just click on Throwback Posts from Blogspot (from 2008) and you can read all of my stories dated way back in my freshman year of HS. How was I able to do this? Visit Blogger to Tumblr, input your Blogspot feed URL (http://yoursite.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default) and Tumblr URL then you are all set. Take note you could only import 100 posts per day.

Since class was suspended today, I will blog about Friday’s shooting for our first short film in VPRODUC entitled The Arrival among other things. We were all stoked the moment it was announced in that class last Wednesday upon discussion of the different camera movements. Our group, comprised of Monzie and Isab, patterned our short film after a story wherein a couple reunites in an airport after quite a time of the girl going overseas. Upon finalizing the details, by Friday morning we were all set for a filming adventure.

First location: Dangwa. Our male character (played by Isab’s friend Joe who is also a member of the Harlequin Theater Guild) buys a bouquet of flowers to give her girlfriend (played by our friend Gabe). People were staring at us the whole time we were at Dangwa because they thought we were making a big-budget blockbuster film to be released in theaters come Christmas season. In fact, one of the vendors even offered his co-vendor to play a role in our short film!

Photos on location by Monzie:

Isab and I directing Joe on what to do in the scene

Second Location: Ninoy Aquino International Airport

Security was tight but thanks to a media relations officer we met we were able to shoot within the grounds of Terminal 2! Our shoot was a wrap thirty minutes later. To the media relations officer, I may not know your name but without you we would not have succeeded in filming inside the airport. Before we left NAIA, we had a little souvenir for ourselves as a reminder of our first short film:

image

Many thanks to my fabulous groupies Monzie and Isab, actors Gabe and Joe, and the vendors and officers for contributing to the success of our video production!

After that, Monzie and I headed back to school for a lunch at Tori Box which was then followed by our residency at the Green & White office. The afternoon was fun because we sang our hearts out courtesy of The Voice app on Pau’s iPad while sharing dozens of laughs. I loved them from the very beginning but it grew more after the teambuilding last September 13 and 14 which by the way was a blast! It was our beloved associated editor’s birthday so happy birthday again Donna!

Two days after Apple released iOS 7 to the public, I became part of the 30% who updated their devices to the much-anticipated software update. And it did not disappoint me with its neat and sleek user-interface even though it took me ten minutes to adapt to the new look!

Let's Get Random, Shall We?

Should thcandydoll return to Blogspot where everything began?

On Sunday morning,  I opened my old Blogspot account because I was torn whether I should import all my posts from this Tumblr to Blogspot (where the site I used to own was housed) or not. As much as I enjoy sharing my personal thoughts on the website I learned to love, at that time I thought of returning to where it all began because I missed it so much. Just when I was about to continue the process, I realized one distinct thing I cannot absolutely do on Blogspot: reblog posts that can serve as fillers every time I have nothing to share about my life. Besides, why abandon Tumblr if I have earned a respectable following since I landed my feet on this cyberspace? Right now I am sitting in my bed wearing a pink hoodie I’ve owned since first year high school and typing this entry in the blogging platform we all spend our owl-foresaken hours.

While girls my age are drooling over One Direction and boys turning into werewolves, my attention is on my newfound love for hockey players and the sport itself. And it all began last summer.

Call me an alien or anything but I would pick an attractive and skilled hockey player over any member of the band any day. Nothing against 1D though; in fact I admire their tightness on and off stage and the loyal fans who support all five of them instead of just one member (remember Justin Timberlake and N*SYNC?). It’s just that my preferences differ from many girls my age these days. Back to hockey players: it’s perfectly normal to find some of them attractive but it should not be the reason why you are a fan of the sport. A friendly reminder coming from someone who got introduced to the sport officially this summer: you are watching a game, not a male beauty pageant. It’s the National Hockey League, not the National Handsome League. If I watched hockey only to see how dreamy the players are, I would have stopped supporting the Pittsburgh Penguins only because of their forgettable series against the Boston Bruins in this year’s Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Finals (don’t remind me about that it still hurts but I’m glad Chicago won the Stanley Cup). Win or lose, I remain supportive of them even though they lost two games in the preseason to the Red Wings and the Blue Jackets huhu. Thanks to Youtube, Bleacher Report, and the fandom on Tumblr and even Twitter, I learned to appreciate hockey more than those pretty faces; rather, it is a sport just as exciting as basketball except it is on the ice. I’ve made a resolution to myself: I shall be fully updated with what’s happening to the hockey league beginning this season.

*daratdatdatdadadadat* Just search for the hockey tag if you really want to know what I’m talking about. I would not mention names anymore, but without being a puck bunny all I have to say is there are lots of players who are offsprings of beauty and brawn in the league. Never ever go to a game in a wedding dress like this lass down here (and this is coming from a Sidney Crosby fan):

image

Trust me, there are more of these fan signs all over the Web. Many of them are straight-up hilarious.

There she was just walking down the street singing doo wah diddy diddy dum diddy doo

Odd fact: I’ve been listening to that song for a week now. Blame this radio station for playing that in one of their segments on Monday last week. Hearing the Manfred Mann’s signature hit always reminds me of My Girl (the movie) and Ang TV (theme song) because it was largely used there. Please don’t judge me for finding pleasure in songs from the fifties and sixties.

Save the iPhone 5C for next Christmas or on my 21st birthday, eh?

I love my current phone so much even though 4S, 5, and now 5S and 5C are the reigning hot commodities in the smartphone market. Why swap it for a newer model when mine is still working perfectly and beautifully? I’d love to snag the pink one if given the chance though :)

That’s all for now folks! Before I bid adieu, let me leave you some words of wisdom from Dr. D during our first meeting in INSERCH: “It’s not about time. It’s all about self-respect and discipline.” So do not rush things. Make the most out of the minutes in creating an exemplary, well-made output. Squandering precious time would let you lose your chance at what would have been inedible pieces of knowledge.

NOTE: I still haven’t updated my phone to iOS 7…aaaaaand I AM SO STOKED FOR THIS YEAR’S UAAP BASKETBALL’S FINAL FOUR.

Guess Who's Back, Guess Who's Back, Guess Who's Back

The title of this blog post is written that way because I am literally back in the world of personal blogging (other than threedaystobelovelyy, urgh, I mean glossandshutters but more about that after the jump). First term was tenacious yet the lessons I’ve learned from Sir Gary, Sir Doy, Sir Jimmy, and Miss Eva made me proud to be a Communication Arts major. The workload may have been heavy; the demands may have been perspiring, but the lessons they’ve taught us prepared us for the future. I am blessed to have met them for they willingly shared to us their prowess in the field of mass communication. Each one of them taught us the value of creativity, perseverance, and succinct thinking. From the very beginning, they told us repeatedly that majoring in AB-CAM is not a piece of cake. Just like life itself, we have to start from scratch. Any form of procrastination is strictly prohibited in this degree program. Although the road may have been tough, I am fortunate to be one of the very few who have been mentored by a roster of excellent, precise, dedicated professors like them. Their values sealed my preparation for the real world.

I’m honored to have taken my first four majors (INTBROD, INTFILM, MASSCOM, and FOTOCOM) under these gifted professors who further cultivated my growth as a girl with a dream to work in the media industry upon graduation. Thanks to Miss Eva, I became a more open-minded member of the broadcasting audience. Thanks to Sir Gary, I have realized that mass communication theories are truly useful and not as vapid as it sounds because his stories on basketball and everything around the campus made our lectures interesting. Thanks to Sir Doy, I became a better film critic with a broad appreciation for local and foreign cinema. And thanks to Sir Jimmy, I can now produce photos of better quality thanks to my newfound knowledge on aperture, shutter speed, and exposure. (On a random note: I never used the auto setting of my SLR since FOTOCOM.)

INSERCH, VPRODUC, INTPRIN, and TREDFOR: I’m ready for you!

Speaking of the past few weeks…

Tita Friendship came to the Philippines for a visit and along came these goodies from my mom! Two pairs of the low cut sneakers I’ve been dying to have since forever and tops from F21 and Mango!

Are you looking for a cheap yet sultry-tasting donut? Cafe de Seoul’s Creamy Cookie Crush is the answer to your question! I bought this delicious treat for only P55 and ate this while watching Atonement with da BFF Monzie <3 This was the exact photo I uploaded on Instagram around two weeks ago…and was shocked with the number of likes it received.

The day Monzie and I had our FOTOCOM portfolio photos printed, she treated me to Krispy Kreme’s ever-famous glazed donuts, the successor to another supercalifragilisticallyyummy dish we had for lunch:

Clam pasta with olive oil at Mary Grace. Sumptuous taste that’s worth the price!

It’s never too late to read something new! My invigorating need to read a book during the term break finally gave in when I read (and finished) Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters in less than 48 hours! I’ve always wanted to read Rick Riordan’s bestselling series largely due to friends talking about how much they love it. So when I saw the Percy Jackson series in my cousins’ room, I did not hesitate to turn the page and immense myself into the incredulous adverntures inside Half-Blood Camp and the Sea of Monsters. After reading this, I can say I am part of the club of those who have read a Percy Jackson book although I’ve never watched eitherThe Lightning Thief or The Sea of Monsters

I spent the whole term break at Cavite with my cousins, Tito Dilts, Tito Rodel and Tita Janet, Lola Nel, and Lolo Manny and Lola Glo! Abby and Reese love the camera as much as I do, and the photo above is very self-explanatory.

Meet the family dog from Cavite, Dwende (or Dendeng?!). Those hazel eyes brighten up everyone’s day, don’t you think?

Selfies taken by Monzie after our studio photography session in FOTOCOM! Gonna show you more in a later post :)

Let’s not forget about my second term schedule:

image

No need to point it out how suckish my Monday and Tuesday schedules are. First time ever to have a class beyond 6PM thanks to INTPRIN, but hey, it’s a rite of passage in becoming a certified Communication Arts student in Taft!

ANNOUNCEMENT: I’ve changed my reblog site URL from threedaystobelovelyy to glossandshutters! Mind you, it took me around 45 minutes to come up with this title.

ANOTHER ANNOUNCEMENT: All the sleepless nights I endured last term were worth it because I made the Dean’s List once again! This would have to be my most unexpected of all especially since all of my subjects were majors and they weren’t the typical subjects you want to slack off. Either way, I can give myself a pat on the back for an incredible first term - the best since 2011. For the past two years, first term sucked academically but now the First Term Curse has been broken with this achievement! :)
