Mind Ramble of the Day: About the Teen Edition

Time has gone fast. One month to go, I’m going back to school, see my friends, and know about the summer buzz. One month to go and the first half of the year is over. Can’t I imagine about how fast time has come? Ha. Two years ago, we’ve seen the debut of this popular reality show we call the PBB Teen Edition. We’ve seen the Big Winner get the loads of projects (call her OVERRATED!!!! ) while some people keep on criticizing her talent and overexposure. But now the second batch has arrived, us viewers are once again watching their moves 24/7 and scratching our heads predicting what will happen next. So for the Mind Ramble of the Day, I will talk about the current season of PBB Teen Edition.

I don’t hate the current season and the others. I watch it for entertainment. In truth, I was never obsessed with the show like I wrote in my profile. I just knew about the pairings, Big Bro’s funny tasks, and the rivalries created inside the house. Why did I choose today’s edition as my topic for MR? It just slipped on my mind why almost every girl in Pinas is crushing on the good-looking guy housemates and how some take their obsession to the next level by crying when their bet gets nominated/evicted. Since I am a member of a popular teen forum online, I have noticed that the PBB thread has reached 300+ pages in the span of one month while one housemate has a fanlisting thread that reached 100+ pages. No probs for me because that housemate is fine for me.

The Teen Edition is made for Filipino teenagers determined to be good examples to the youth. It’s not just the million peso prize or a future celebrity status that will make one a household name. The goal of this edition is to teach teens to do the good and say “no” to evil. But recently, I’ve noticed that it’s becoming more of a popularity contest and not a reality contest. From the beginning, many viewers criticized it as “scripted” especially during a collapse of a seemingly healthy housemate or a fan favorite turned hell to his/her peers. And there are the voters. They pout when their bet gets nominated and those people waste their load voting for their faves. When it doesn’t work, some swear never to watch the show again. About the good-looking ones being saved over the ones who were true to themselves on eviction night: the votes might be the “crush votes”.

Plus, the happenings in the house might have affected the viewers who are really crazed about the show. For example a pairing is introduced while slowly turning on their relationships out of the house. Some will follow their every move, talk about it, and make a uniname although they’re just “best friends” (e.g. Bennifer). Then when they fight or refuse to speak to each other when their stay is over, the flame dies out. Violent reactions are also present to the obsessed fans. And what if the housemates all disappeared on TV one day after their popularity? Only the future can hold.

So that’s just my opinion about the edition. But the question still stands still: is PBB becoming more of a beauty contest than a reality show? You be the judge.

BTW, it’s Labor Day today. Let’s honor all of the workers who sacrificed their time to support us and the whole country. And I can’t believe that I grew an inch last night! Keep on growing, girl.
