Hey Hey 2015

As this would be the last post of 2014, I’d like to thank all of you for keeping this blog alive and for making life awesome the past twelve months. I was supposed to write about my year-end post at this time but I’ll be spending the day with my family the rest of the day so let’s save it first. Have a blessed New Year everyone!

P.S. I have no regrets watching both Before Sunrise and Before Sunset in less than twelve hours. Must-see films!

Hallelujah, Where's The Tylenol?

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas with your loved ones! So what has happened during my Christmas break so far? Let me tell you about it through these photographs:

I was lacking in polo shirts so I was glad when I finally got some pieces from Giordano. In addition to these comfy tops, I got a Cache Cache dress on sale!

When I was first introduced to Uniqlo two years ago thanks to blogs and billboards, I have to admit I wasn’t too impressed with their stuff because I thought it was limited to winter apparel only. Then came those graphic tees from Peanuts and Disney as well as the flannel polos and va va voom dresses which have changed my perspective on the clothing brand. Ever since snagging a hoodie (current fave) from there earlier in the year, I appreciated Uniqlo more than I expected.

Speaking of Christmas gifts, I did not get a gadget or a gift card from the best brands in the world. I’m fine with it because spending time with my parents is enough with me to have a meaningful Yuletide celebration to be honest. What my dad gave me just trumps any of the things on my wishlist because it just came out of the blue while strolling around H&M in Orchard. I am forever grateful for finally getting this baby in my closet. And here it is…TADA!

Sirloin and oglio pasta meal during a dinner with mom at Hot Tomato!

Just chillin’ in the swimming pool at my parents’ new place. It’s 2014 and I still swim like a puppy.

A few days before Christmas, I got this marvelous surprise when I logged in to my MyLasalle account. Thank you so much Sir Doy (MSMEDIA and thesis mentor) and Miss Mamawal (PRODUCE) for rewarding the hard work I’ve put up the three months! I would not have survived (and enjoyed) the term without my professors, friends, classmates, orgmates, and family.

JUST ONE MORE TERM LEFT!!!

Other Stuff in Life, Lately:

  • Alex Goot and Friends’ cover of 22 is eargasm.

  • I loved Pop Danthology 2013. 2014? Personally it was meh. But I trust your musical skills so you be the judge.

  • I just finished all ten episodes (so far) of Gotham and now I can’t wait for the series to resume soon.

  • Halfway done with David Sheff's Beautiful Boy. Emotionally compelling book.

  • The longest I’ve ran on a treadmill is ten minutes. TEN MINUTES. Gah time to start working on my fitness.

  • I’m going to work on my year-end post right before the calendar turns to 2015.

  • I can’t find a decent livestream of the World Junior Championships :(  The reason I want to watch it is to see how hockey’s prospects are thriving even before they turn pro.

  • "You’re soft like Charmin.” - Thanks Kobe for my new favorite catchphrase.

  • Updated my personal portfolio and CV over the break! #proud

  • Gonna watch The Interview after publishing this. See you guys later leaving now!

2014 Pittsburgh Penguins Holiday Card

I woke up at 5AM yesterday only to see the Penguins’ tweet link to their holiday video. This is not only better than their fake holiday album the previous year but also it’s more hilarious. I guess I have to watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation now as the team’s e-card is a parody of the comedy film.

Off-topic: so far my Christmas vacation is going smoothly :)

Just as when I thought I could no longer escape the dark cave of thesis, horrendous losing streaks, and wild stuff I couldn’t think of anymore, the rays of sunshine struck my eyes. Lo and behold, I saw awesome people and with that I turned into a happy wiggly penguin again :“>

Enough of Encyclopedia Dramatica and move on to life lately - a very, very delayed edition that a bunch of stuff happened a month ago!

What happened in November: mustache everywhere, four weeks of blood, sweat and tears because of thesis proposal, getting all the white hair from worrying about a bunch of stuff, the MSMEDIA speaker series, all the ups and downs of PRODUCE, the internship at the Tullao Lecture Series, Aldrin’s birthday lunch (with Cadbury galore), and the Penguins going on their annual November hump once again.

What happened in December (so far): SMO Christmas Party, PRODUCE trailer shoot for our horror anthology series, caught up with TV shows and films, an enticing dinner at Bagnet 8065 with ze friends before the PRODUCE shoot yesterday, applied for the 1st Communication Conference central committee to celebrate the Comm Department’s 40th anniversary in February, distributed Green & White registration kits, and I’m getting DESFILM (Design for Film) and INDIFLM (Independent Film) for my electives next term.

Christmas break, better be grade-A amazing!

11.23.2014

I will return to blogging as soon as I pass my thesis proposal.

I’m glad I’m almost done with my drafts, only have to work out on my revisions. Just a friendly reminder: the annual “November Sucks” trend has just hit its stride once again. Nevertheless, I’m glad my friends and family have been awesome and to be honest they’re the only pluses at this time.

Well at least December has always been a great month for as long as I could remember.

Good News With Thesis

It’s been two weeks late (yeah I know lots of stuff to do) but I’m proud to bear the good news that my topic proposal for thesis has been finally approved last October 16! The best part is, I was not asked to defend as three out of four panelists have approved my concept beforehand. The only one who gave me the verdict of “defend” was Dr. Diaz, but other than that I’m truly blessed to see the fruit of all my efforts to improve my thesis topic.

A week before the second reading, I was in shambles. There wasn’t a single word typewritten in front of my laptop’s screen. My mind was point blank of interesting, crisp ideas. My future, whether to graduate next year along with the rest of my Comm Arts batchmates or extend for another term, was in doubt. I wanted to quit and drop the course altogether because I couldn’t get it together. I wanted to get off the monkey off my back but it was stuck with me.

Then I was enlightened by my family, friends, my mentor Sir Doy, and God to not surrender and continue with what I’ve started. Besides, I’ve taken so many sacrifices and hardships just to get where I am right now. Moreover, not everyone has been given the opportunity to be part of the University’s most renowned degree programs. So I said to myself as I was writing the final draft of my topic proposal, “I’m a few steps away from fulfilling my lifelong dream, so why give it up now?"

On October 13, before my PRODUCE class, I left five copies of my proposal in Sir Doy’s pigeon hole.

Three days later, I finally got the yes I always wanted to hear.

I cannot wait for my final term beginning in January of next year. I am almost there.

September and October in Photos

These photos encapsulate how amazing the past two months have been (especially October), from friends to family to school life. There were two weeks that have been quite rough for me but it doesn’t take away the fact life has been a lot better than I expected.

Speaking of extracurriculars, I’m enjoying my time between Green & White and the production internship for Dr. Tullao’s lecture series. I’m glad I’ve met a lot of friends along the way aside from doing the best I could do in my responsibilities. Thank goodness for those opportunities; my time is not wasted by bumming around which I don’t like to do so at all.

Without further ado, let me tell you the story behind those photos:

1: Borg’s is one of the newly-opened restaurants inside Archers, and it does not disappoint. Their chicken fillet with mushroom gravy is delicious although the java rice is a little bit too small for my appetite. I’d love to go back there and try their other delicacies soon!

2. Monzie’s mom got free tickets to a PBA exhibition game between the San Miguel Beermen and the Meralco Bolts at the Blue Eagle Gym. Whoa! On the way to Katipunan, Monzie and I were joking about wearing a DLSU shirt inside the campus which prompted us to think of a scenario in which a bunch of students catch us in our green-friendly gear. The game was intense itself, ending in a tie between the two teams. The fun part was seeing the players in person. No photos with them though because the place was crowded and the players were gassed out by the time the game ended :( Either way, we were able to see a clean-shaven Simon Atkins, Coach Norman Black, and Chris Newsome in person! Additionally, the experience of going to an archrival’s gym was fun.

3. After the exhibition game, we were invited to a dinner at Kenny Rogers. Yay for food galore! Chicken and veggies aside, this brownie ala mode was heaven in my taste buds.

4-5. The last time I went to STC was in September 2011 when I reunited with IV-3 and my batchmates to claim our high school yearbooks. Yesterday I returned to my beloved alma mater for Family Day to not only watch Monzie’s niece in the GS field demonstration but also to reunite with my old friends and teachers. Walking through the corridors, greeting people I haven’t seen in three years, and basking in the sunshine illuminating the lawns of the campus made me feel like I’m sixteen again.

6. Shoutout to Mariae for tagging me and Marga into bringing us to throwback land on Instagram! That was our logo for We Ala Kings, a brand we made for our feasibility project in TLE back in senior year. I was the one who made the tagline hihi :“>

7. Tita Badet came home from her visit in Singapore to these tops my mom bought for me. Lovin’ the printed tee from Esprit and the kitty crop top from H&M! Well speaking of H&M, I have yet to visit a newly-opened branch of theirs here in Manila lol.

8. Monzie and April aka my "thesismates”! Haha! I may be working alone but I enjoy bonding times with these two. They’ll be doing a documentary in Bataan while I’ll work on a screenplay like I’ve always wanted to do. <3

9. Meals with friends = one of the things that make me happy.

As for life lately:

  • Please don’t let Justin Bieber sing “All About That Bass” again. EVER.

  • Sana Dati, The Notebook and The Normal Heart = tearjerkers

  • Is it just me, or does Annabelle look like Glen from Seed of Chucky?

  • I missed eating BBQ. Thanks to this food stall during Family Day, there was a feast of isaw, pork ears, and bituka. Cheap thrills rule.

  • I know it’s early in the season but fans should stop overreacting with every win or loss. It’s just October. So Islanders fans, stop acting like you’ve won the Cup. Blues, you can still make the playoffs in April.  To the Penguins, #DontTradeFleury, #DontFireEveryone and #BringBackBylsma when you lose.

  • I might start watching How To Get Away With Murder after watching an episode in the office.  There goes my list of movies and TV shows to watch!

  • I don’t use iTunes anymore to be honest because Spotify is making music so much convenient for me. Also, I don’t have to spend my entire memory with songs when I could stream them online.

  • I can’t wait to watch Blue Is The Warmest Color

  • November’s gonna be one hell of a busy month.

Gonna be blogging about some good news next post. Stay tuned.

When Johnny saw Winona for the first time he was 26 and she was 18. They were every adolescent’s dream - he was a teen idol and she was little more than a teenager. They knew of one another through their movies but they met in person at the premiere of Great Balls of Fire, Winona wore white and was in the hall drinking a Coke. “It was a classic glance,” said Depp, “like the zoom lenses in West Side Story, and everything else gets foggy.” “It wasn’t a long moment – echoed Winona - but it was suspended.”

They met again several months later at Johnny’s ‘home’ at the Chateau Marmont and they talked about their mutual love of Catcher in the Rye and the soundtrack from The Mission. A week or so later their union was blessed during their first official date, by the LSD guru, Timothy Leary, who, just like in a screenplay of a dark rom-com, was the godfather of “I have never had a boyfriend and I stay at home with my mum and watch old movies” Winona and the idol of the Beat Generation “I finished trying out all the drugs there were at 14” Johnny.
Shortly after that she had a ring on her finger and he had “Winona forever” tattooed on his biceps.

She said things like: “When I met Johnny, I was pure virgin. He changed that. He was my first everything. My first real kiss. My first real boyfriend. My first fiancé. The first guy I had sex with. So he’ll always be in my heart. Forever. Kind of funny that word."
He responded with: ”I’d die for her. I love her so much. I don’t know what I would do without her. She’s going through a lot right now. I wish I could just kiss away the pain, make it go away, stop it, kill it! If she, you know, I don’t know what I would do. I’d kill myself. I love that girl. I love her. I love her almost more than I love myself.” Or: “Believe me, this Winona Forever tattoo is not something I took lightly…Her eyes kill me”.

I WANT TO CRY

Aw..MY EYES ARE WATERING. Goodness they were so perfect.

Everybody Panic?

In the middle of writing this post, I accidentally closed my Internet browser so everything disappeared in one click.

image

My laptop’s LCD screen broke, disabling me from working on stuff in a flawless screen. Thank goodness it’s fixed now, but the horror of not being able to work on layouts or blog entries and watch films that a tablet or a smartphone cannot do for an extended period of time.

On Wednesday, my laptop’s LCD blacked out for no reason. Chaos everywhere. But a single reboot made everything function the way it is supposed to be.

Then this past weekend, I worked on the revisions of my thesis proposal for my second reading this Thursday. I changed my topic because one of the panelists thought it was not interesting enough, hence the verdict of “resubmit” - not a disapprove but improve on the potential of the topic. However, I decided to work on another one since the concept of dealing with peer victimization is too cliched although it is relatable to adolescents everywhere.

My mood is collectively orchestrated by this image below, stress and all (with tears as a bonus):

                            image

Thanks to my friends, family, and professors, I was able to control myself a little bit. They always told me two things to remember: 1) do not compare your Chapter 1 to everyone else’s Chapter 20 because we all have to start somewhere, and 2) if you did not get what you wanted the first time, continue to persevere and you’ll achieve it eventually. I’m lucky to have even given the verdict of resubmit rather than disapproved, but what made my heart sink was hearing all those stories which left me pondering whether I am good enough or not. I guess having to go through the second reading only means God wants me to do really well in my thesis.

The topic proposal, my friends, is the reason why I shed so much tears the past few days. Frustration mounted my brain the entire time I worked on my revisions. Deep inside I was sad my topic didn’t get approved immediately, but it only served as my motivation to revise my topic from boring (according to one panelist) to something much more appealing to future audiences. I tried to make it simple and blunt as much as possible. I kept on wondering what would have been had I been approved in the first reading, but everyone helped me ease the pain and move forward . Every time I feel sad thinking my work is inferior compared to others, I just remember that God wants me to improve so my final output would be something I’d be very proud to have accomplished in the end.

I must stay positive. I must stay confident. I can survive this. I will get the “Yes” of Dr. D, Sir Gary, and many others. I can do it!!!

I'm Still Alive.

For so many reasons I can count them more than my ten fingers, no decent blog post since almost three weeks ago. My laptop’s LCD broke so there’s that. I’m stressed out with thesis proposal so there’s another one. September was just plain bad so down goes another.

About Relationship Goals.

I don’t really write about love in here, but this is one thing I’ve always wanted to talk about publicly.

Let me reveal something to you: I stopped following certain Twitter accounts not only they annoyed me so much but for the fact they put the statement “relationship goals” in every friggin’ photo ever regardless of its irrelevance to the context. For example, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher eating a donut is what some others consider as a standard of an ideal relationship nowadays.

Yes, you’ve read it right. A DONUT.

We should not get too obsessed with trying to formulate the perfect relationship by setting unrealistic expectations that when not met we become ultimately disappointed. Being successful together, staying as a couple through thick and thin, and being happy in each other’s company? These are the REAL relationship goals, not those awfully cheesy text messages or couple shirts or letting your partner buy all of your luxuries. True love doesn’t work like that.  Movies are movies, books are books - do not get disheartened when you don’t end up with someone who is an exact replica of Augustus Waters or Jack Dawson because each person has its imperfections but that’s what makes them special in their own way. Can you imagine a world filled entirely with Jennifer Aniston or Ryan Gosling clones if we were to grant everyone’s ideal standards of the perfect partner? It may look appealing at first, but the more you think of it the more eerie it gets. There is no variation in the human population when every guy is a Gosling and every girl is an Aniston doppleganger.

The point is, don’t let your standards of an ideal relationship be defined by the couples portrayed in the media alone. A perfect relationship does not exist without goofing around with each other one minute then have a petty spat the next. Don’t depend your life or your happiness solely on your desire to have the perfect partner. Keep an optimistic outlook, work your way to success, and good things will come to you and your relationship.

If I were committed to such at present, I would still share the same thoughts.

9.20.2014

I am more excited for the Penguins this upcoming season more than last year. The bottom six improved. There is a new general manager and a set of coaches. The new third jersey rocks my socks. I am hopeful for a deep playoff run this season then end with the team winning the Stanley Cup to silence all those who underestimated them only because they didn’t sign any big names during the free agency. A friendly reminder to all those whiners that it takes four lines and good coaching to win the Cup, not two or three superstars. Also, I wish for good health for all players.

I hope I would get to watch their games via livestream more often since in the next few months I’d be stacked with thesis, practicum, and electives. Anyways I’m optimistic that this season the Penguins will prove everyone that they are a far stronger team than ever.

What’s the worst thing I’ve stolen? Probably little pieces of other people’s lives. Where I’ve either wasted their time or hurt them in some way. That’s the worst thing you can steal, the time of other people. You just can’t get that back.

Second To The Last

Two weeks ago, I was vixated with the possible outcome of my grades for my final first term in college. Save for WRIFILM (my favorite subject at the time), my hair turned gray from panicking about NARATIV and TELVPRO because those were two of the most challenging subjects I’ve ever encountered.

Two weeks ago, my dream of graduating with honors was in mere jeopardy. If my GPA went below 2.667, I had no choice but kiss it goodbye and settle for something else. It wasn’t enough for me, however, because all I wanted was to prove to everyone I could be a baton of excellence and not someone who rode on the coattails of people who reached the top through their utmost efforts.

Two weeks ago, sleep became a casualty rather than a necessity. As much as I wanted eight hours in Dreamland daily, it was almost impossible to do so because I spent my free time conceptualizing my narrative pamphlet and brainstorming witty dialogues in what could be the next standard bearer of Philippine cinema.

And then this happened; there is no doubt this is one of the biggest surprises I’ve ever had.

image

After two terms of frustration, I hit the 3.000 GPA again!!! :D/

This makes up for the third term earlier in the year when I came close only to get a so-so grade in RADIPRO of all subjects. Nevertheless, I was able to recover from my disappointment, and it was a breeze to get back on track once again!

Note: I don’t have any floating subjects anymore since I took them before I shifted plus my majors are only offered once a year :)

My penultimate term started last Monday, and I hereby present my schedule:

image

The first two days of second term did not make me yawn even a single second. Our PRODUCE class made us get to know more about the world’s most prolific media moguls and producers. Learning that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas traded ideas for their respective blockbusters (Spielberg’s E.T. was Lucas’ idea, Lucas’ Star Wars was Spielberg’s) left us speechless. As if it was astonishing enough, we were blown away with Jerry Bruckheimer and his works. Before that class, I was not aware he produced Confessions of A Shopaholic! We wrapped up our discussion by watching a short documentary on Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) and the pilot episode of his series The Newsroom. Sorkin is known for his lengthy, poetic lines which was a notable observation as we were watching the episode. Try watching YouTube clips of Sorkin’s other works such as A Few Good Men and The West Wing in your spare time and see if you catch the pattern in his writing style.

A light-hearted moment in PRODUCE was us seeing Miss Mamawal react every time a photo of Nicholas Cage popped out in the Jerry Bruckheimer slideshow to pertain the producer’s fascination for the Con-Air star. Haha!

Meanwhile in MSMEDIA, we watched Sir Doy’s documentary on poverty in Manila with some parts showing a young girl reading magazines and newspapers profiling the lifestyle of the wealthy. Upon viewing it, he discussed to us on how morning shows often invites a chef to cook breakfast to be feasted by the hosts thereafter. Sir Doy and I shared the same sentiments all along: media sets the spotlight on nothing else other than glamour when real life is an exact juxtaposition of that.

I’ve been a production intern for Dr. Tullao’s lecture series since Monday and will remain so until the end of the term. Glad I have something productive to do on Monday and Wednesday afternoons besides academics and org work. Another good thing about my current venture is that it exposes me to the world of work after graduation.

Before I end this post, I’d like to thank my orgmates from Green & White for an unforgettable teambuilding last weekend at Club Balai Isabel! Gorgeous environment, good food, and fantastic company.

Thank you Monzie for nominating me to the 10-Book Challenge on Facebook! The objective is simple: list ten books that have created a significant impact in your life. You can either make this your status on Facebook then tag ten of your friends including the one who nominated you so he / she would see your list, or post this to your blog so anyone could be inspired to do one of their own.

Here is my list, in no particular order:

  1. Are You There, God? It’s Me Margaret by Judy Blume

  2. Nineteen Minutes by Jody Picoult

  3. Reviving Ophelia by Mary Pipher

  4. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

  5. Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach

  6. Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

  7. Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman

  8. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey

  9. Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

  10. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffeneger

Now I have shared mine, it’s your turn to go forth and spread the 10-Book Challenge! :)

9.01.2014

Just watched The Darjeeling Limited this afternoon and I regret nothing. On to Perks of Being A Wallflower now!

I’m in Cavite right now for my term break so there is a valid reason why I haven’t been spending much time online lately which is a good thing for me because nothing could stop me from binging on films for inspiration. Not only I was able to finish the first season of My Mad Fat Diary in one day, I was also able to spend quality time with my grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins.

Hello Stranger

To tell you frankly, I didn’t appreciate Closer back when I first watched it the summer before my freshman year in high school. All I heard about it since then was that it revolved around the theme of truth in addition to the fine performances of the actors (most especially Natalie Portman as Alice).

Then two weeks ago in my NARATIV elective, we were discussing story frames when Closer popped up as an example of the snapshot structure. If you watch the film, you’d observe it jumps to the pivotal points of the characters’ relationships which is one of the story frame’s characteristics. Now that I am practically done with hell week, I decided to reward myself by catching up with my accounts, TV shows, and movies. That’s how I turned to watching Closer again this afternoon only this time I was able to comprehend the essence of the entire film.

I know I haven’t been in touch with digital illustration and typography lately because I was so engrossed with producing TV shows, writing screenplays, and differentiating the narrative of classical Hollywood films from those of the Philippines. The good thing about this “break”, despite  it being ten days only, is I am able to practice with things I want to learn.

Just like the stuff I’ve been doing the past 36 hours.

The first one is a vector portrait I made of Alice from Closer

The Cinemalaya X-perience

Man, I missed blogging what’s happening with life lately! Being stacked with schoolwork in addition to the thoughts of possible topics for thesis have occupied most of my time the past month. When I woke up this morning, I finally had the guts to get up and blog on my experience on the tenth installment of the Cinemalaya Film Festival or widely dubbed as Cinemalaya X.

They say time flies when you’re having fun, and this is the perfect tagline for the past week’s Cinemalaya experience when I watched five movies and a documentary in seven days. Prior to this year, I watched the following offerings of the film festival: Posas (my first one), Debosyon, Quick Change, and The Animals. Glad to say, Cinemalaya X did not disappoint me one bit although some of my expectations went a little over the roof because of hearsays from people who have watched the film before I did.

image

The picture answers the question “What movies did you watch in Cinemalaya?"

My friends and I headed to CCP to catch Documented, the opening documentary of the film festival, after the annual Student Media Office (SMO) orientation last Friday. That day was also notable because it was our first time to attend Cinemalaya’s opening ceremony. We were able to see the directors in the flesh as they were introduced onstage aside from watching all the trailers from this year’s entries. Hearing about the Cinemalaya Foundation’s chairman talking about the film festival’s humble beginnings in 2005 lifted my spirit because it is great to see how far they have reached since its inception.

image

All smiles beside the memorabilia from this year’s entries!

Another great thing about the Cinemalaya experience is attending the gala premiere of one of its films, something we were able to do so with Ida Anita Del Mundo’s K'na The Dreamweaver. Ida’s speech where she discussed the making of the film and introduced the cast was so moving I got a little teary-eyed. The moment she thanked all those who supported her in the process, I whispered to myself, "One day, this will be me."

After the film, we exited the Main Theater and went down to the lobby to be greeted by a populous crowd filled with students, actors, film enthusiasts, and people from the entertainment industry. Although the commotion was a bit irritating because there was a little space to walk through, it was a great feeling to know what is it like to be part of a gala premiere like the ones I’ve seen on television when I was a kid.

What’s a gala premiere without the celebrity encounters?

image

Look, it’s Nora Aunor waving at us!!!

Hysteria ensued when Nora Aunor appeared on the second floor. Everyone started chanting "Hustisya!” and “I love you, Nora!” as soon as she turned to wave at the crowd. When I got home that evening, my grandma couldn’t believe it since she is a huge fan of the superstar.

We were able to have a photo op with K'na The Dreamweaver’s Nonie Buencamino and Sir Doy Del Mundo, a celebrated screenwriter who is also my professor for last year’s INTFILM (Introduction to Film) and next term’s MSMEDIA (Mass Media and Society).

Seeing memorabilia from the films was a lovely sight.

I would have loved to watch more films but because of my schedule I was down to five: K'na The Dreamweaver, Hari ng Tondo, Hustisya, Ronda, and #Y. As for Hustisya which Direk Joey recommended during our WRIFILM class, it would have been better if the plot didn’t have much loopholes in it. K'na gave me a glimpse of the T'boli culture, Ronda had several references to Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Hari ng Tondo reminded me of the everyday life I’m used to seeing since birth, and #Y made me think more about living life to the fullest. Each of these films offered a lot of things many mainstream films fail to incorporate nowadays such as issues affecting our society as the main theme and minimal audience spoonfeeding.

Being part of yet another year of this film festival made me appreciate the local independent film industry even more. Until next year, Cinemalaya!

One of my life goals is to see my feature published in Thought Catalog. The only dilemma is that I do not know exactly what to write. I’m greatly inexperienced in the dating scene so therefore let me scratch any topic pertaining to the big L word. Advice on achieving dreams may perhaps make more sense since I enjoy coming up with words of wisdom inside my crummy head. All overthinking outside, there is a lot of time in the world for me to conceptualize something readers would feast their eyes on more than once, not make them snooze in a way an alarm clock alone would wake them up.

One day, I will be on Thought Catalog. I just need to take my time to develop my gift.

What’s Up With My Life?

1st Photo: I like taking photos of baby Caleb. Isn’t he as cute as a cupcake? Getting home to see him never fails to lighten me up after a long, exhausting day.

2nd Photo: Watched The Virgin Labfest at the CCP last June 27 for my NARATIV class! I’ve never watched a play in the venue until that day. What an enjoyable experience it was to see theater at its finest with its well-written script and superb acting in the flesh.

3rd Photo: Me and my TELVPRO groupmates after the success of Coolture, our first talk show last Thursday! I’m so thankful to be working with these wonderful people.

4th Photo: Jeline, Czar, and I with a memento of our time at The Virgin Labfest. Kevs being Kevs by taking the photo for us as an indictment of his camera-shyness =))

P.S. Today I spent the entire day reading Moby Dick and watching Rebel Without A Cause. I’m not done yet with The Great Budapest Hotel but so far so good! Wes Anderson’s terrific use of design never fails to impress me.

Gratata.

Allow me to scribble some stuff in bold and uppercase. I believe someone is sharing the same thoughts as mine as of the moment now that the San Antonio Spurs and the LA Kings have their championship rings:

NO NHL AND NBA UNTIL OCTOBER (SEPTEMBER IF YOU COUNT PRESEASON).

Welp. All I’m stuck with is UAAP Basketball and my only hope for this season is to see the DLSU Green Archers repeat as champs. Better yet, I’ll just binge on the movies and TV shows stored in my hard drive until the preseason kicks off on September to drive away my raging school spirit with all the rivalry match-ups in the next three months. Don’t forget the bandwagoners, the breakout stars, and the Twitter overreactions. One thing is guaranteed through it all: I support my school’s basketball team in victory or defeat.

In other news, I’ve been watching Teen Wolf, Friends, and Orange is the New Black lately. Since it’s the offseason, I shall watch as many episodes as I could so at least I have something to invest in while waiting for the new season to begin.

Just a few things about my life these past few days:

  • Watched Heathers and Himala in NARATIV and WRIFILM respectively

  • I may be late to the party but The Fault In Our Stars was so good although I didn’t bawl like a baby and a sleeping lady sitting at my back snored so loud all throughout the film

  • Lana Del Rey’s new album “Ultraviolence” is soothing to the ears

  • Best pop anthology I’ve heard in a long time.

  • The evolution from man to jellyfish as illustrated by Fatboy Slim in “Right Here, Right Now”

  • Dark chocolate shake at Mini Stop is my current cheap thrill

  • Maleficient was…disappointing. I’ve been waiting for this since summer, and my expectations were not met once it came out. It leaned towards the Frozen storyline more than Maleficent’s character.

  • A piece of advice from a Comm Arts senior: do your homework a few days in advance to avoid the temptation of cramming. I’ve developed this habit partly because I only meet my majors once or twice a week but mostly because I want to take time to prepare my requirements.

  • I cannot wait for this year’s Student Media Congress this July 25-26!

  • Buzzfeed quizzes are the bomb.

Summer 2014: Marina Bay, Merlion and Johor Bahru

image

First stop: the Sentosa Merlion. To tell you the truth, I only learned the one in Sentosa wasn’t the main tourist attraction because of my tito’s comment, “Isn’t the real Merlion in Marina Bay since the one we’re visiting doesn’t sprout water?” Anyways, we enjoyed visiting the place because we got to experience the skyride. It was so scary up there I screamed so loud andI couldn’t turn back for the fear of losing my shoes. Still it was a great experience overall!

Monster in a trash can? I could live with that!

These two girls are among my all-time favorite models. Oh, did you know that they love The Voice’s Christina Grimmie so much they watched her Q&A video a dozen times?

Selfie on the way down the skyride!

An hour later, we met up with my mom then my dad around dinnertime at Marina Bay Sands. Snapshots below:

I was my tita Janet and tito Rodel’s official photographer during their trip!

Finally, a long overdue family photo at the real Merlion!

Our final stop before the summer vacation officially ended was in Johor Bahru where we dined in at the Grand Straits Seafood Restaurant. Their food was simply the best! I would love to return to that place in the future.

Then there’s this precious carousel right around the corner to remind me of the good ol’ days:

One word to describe this summer: REMARKABLE.
